The LN Freshers' Guide To... Birmingham!

Written by andy.ritchie@livenation.co.uk / September 21, 2016

Hello new resident of Birmingham and the surrounding areas! How are you settling in to the real world? It's awful, isn't it? JUST KIDDING. You're about to have some of the best years of your life, so strap in for the ride.

Anyway, to help you out with planning your Fresher's fun over the coming weeks, we've hand-picked a few of the shows and events you might want to get yourself along to before the Christmas break. Let's begin!

WHO'S THAT, THEN? Rapper, writer and educator Akala from North London.
WHY SHOULD I GO? He's celebrating 10 years of his 'It's Not A Rumour' album on this one, so expect a few songs he hasn't played live in years, including the reworked version of 'Carried Away'.
WHERE / WHEN IS THE SHOW? O2 Institute 2, Thursday, 13th October
BOOK TICKETS

WHO'S THAT, THEN? It's only the bloomin' flame-heared, silver-tongued, iron-lunged Jess Glynne!
WHY SHOULD I GO? Jess has one of the most powerful voices in pop right now, and she never misses a beat. What else is there?
WHERE / WHEN IS THE SHOW? Genting Arena, Friday, 18th November
BOOK TICKETS

WHO'S THAT, THEN? The wonderful Aurora
WHY SHOULD I GO? If not for her incredible vocal talents, Aurora really lets rip when she gets on a stage. Expect flailing limbs, singalongs, and smiles all round!
WHERE / WHEN IS THE SHOW? O2 Institute 2, Friday, 7th October
BOOK TICKETS

WHO'S THAT, THEN? LA poet and rapper Watsky.
WHY SHOULD I GO? Because he's got one of the fastest flows on the US west coast. And he really does nail it live.
WHERE / WHEN IS THE SHOW? O2 Institute 2, Birmingham / Friday, 27th September
BOOK TICKETS

WHO'S THAT, THEN? Electropop-for-the-masses duo, Aquilo
WHY SHOULD I GO? The alt-pop wave is riding high at the moment, and Aquilo are right up there on the crest. Imagine giving your brain a hug. That's what watching Aquilo is like.
WHERE / WHEN IS THE SHOW? O2 Institute 3 / Friday, 21st October
BOOK TICKETS

WHO'S THAT, THEN? Reigning queens of pop Fifth Harmony
WHY SHOULD I GO? Because 'Work From Home'. Because 'That's My Girl'. Because 'Worth It'. That's three reasons, we can think of at least another 12 if you need 'em!
WHERE / WHEN IS THE SHOW? Barclaycard Arena / Wednesday, 12th October
BOOK TICKETS

WHO'S THAT, THEN? One-man-band Jack Garratt (and his beard)

WHY SHOULD I GO? Because quite simply, there's nothing else like him out there right now. Jack plays every instrument you hear himself. Watch the above for the mind-melting evidence.
WHERE / WHEN IS THE SHOW? O2 Academy / Tuesday, 15th November
BOOK TICKETS

WHO'S THAT, THEN? Cali metallers Of Mice & Men
WHY SHOULD I GO? They just dropped their new album 'Cold World' and it hints at a more melodic direction in their future. Doesn't mean their live shows will be any less mad, mind!
WHERE / WHEN IS THE SHOW? O2 Academy, Wednesday, 30th November
BOOK TICKETS

WHO'S THAT, THEN? The Voice From Brighton, Rag 'N Bone Man
WHY SHOULD I GO? If you haven't heard it yet, you will soon. Some are calling him the next Adele because of his powerful set of pipes, which have already earned him solid festy slots over the summer and an appearance on Later... With Jools Holland.
WHERE / WHEN IS THE SHOW? O2 Institute 3 / Wednesday, 23rd November
BOOK TICKETS

WHO'S THAT, THEN? Hot Dub Time Machine
WHY SHOULD I GO? Because it is literally the party of the century. More on that over here.
WHERE / WHEN IS THE SHOW? O2 Academy / Saturday, 8th October
BOOK TICKETS

That's enough to get you started, we reckon.
