Here’s Why Def Leppard Are One Of The Greatest Rock Bands In The World

Written by Megan Snell / October 25, 2018

With the news that they’re headlining Download 2019, and a HUGE UK arena tour set to kick off in December, there’s never been a better time to acknowledge the greatness of Def Leppard. Here are just four reasons why they’re hailed as one of the greatest rock bands in the world...

They’re one of the world’s best-selling artists...

With a HUGE 100 million records sold worldwide, Def Leppard are one of only five rock bands to have two of their original studio albums (‘Pyromania’ and ‘Hysteria’) achieve RIAA Diamond (10 x Platinum) certification.

‘Hysteria’ in particular saw the band achieve worldwide status, with the album putting seven singles in the US Top 40, charting for two solid years, and selling more than 25 million copies worldwide!

They spearheaded the 1980s pop-metal movement...

Def Leppard’s breakthrough third album ‘Pyromania’ saw the band take a step away from their traditional heavy metal roots and towards a more polished sound focused on catchy melodic hooks and glossy production.

This new radio-friendly sound was a major catalyst for the 1980s melodic hard rock movement, and the inclusion of their first big slow song ‘Love Bites’ on their next album ‘Hysteria’ sparked the trend of mainstream metal bands including a power ballad on albums for years to come!

They’re in the Guinness Book of World Records...

With a feat that seems almost impossible to accomplish, Def Leppard hold a Guinness Book of World Record for performing three concerts on three continents in one day, playing shows in Morocco, London and Vancouver on 23rd October 1994!

They’ve won ALL the awards…

Def Leppard's status as one of the most important forces in rock music has been recognised through countless award nominations, with the band winning two American Music Awards’ for ‘Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Artist’ and ‘Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Album’, two Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards for ‘Classic Album’ and ‘Album of the Year’, as well as Metal Hammer’s ‘Legends Award’ and Planet Rock’s ‘The Brick Wall Award’. They've also just been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!
