9 Acts You’d Be Silly To Miss At The Great Escape 2017!

Written by Megan Snell / May 17, 2017

As of tomorrow The Great Escape Festival descends upon Brighton for three days of incredible new music.

With over 400 acts on the bill playing in multiple venues across the city you’d be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed by the bumper line-up. To help you out, we’ve handpicked our 9 faves you should definitely add to your schedules:

WHO? New Gen
WHEN/WHERE? 11:00pm Friday, Upstairs at Patterns
WHY? Founded by Caroline Simionescu-Marin (A&R at XL / editor at GRM Daily) New Gen are the genre-blurring collective providing a snapshot of London’s urban music scene. This is your chance to see the hottest names in British music before they hit the big time.

WHO? Shogun
WHEN/WHERE? 2:15pm Friday, Brighthelm Centre / 6:15pm Friday, Downstairs at Patterns
WHY? The 19-year-old MC has helped put Scotland firmly on the UK grime map with his fiery flow. Check out track 'Vulcan' which has racked up nearly 2.5 millions plays on YouTube:

WHO? Monster Florence
WHEN/WHERE? 2:15pm Thursday, Upstairs at Patterns / 9:15pm Friday, Paganini Ballroom
WHY? Serving up an innovative hybrid of grime-influenced hip-hop and punk, the Colchester collective are set to take over when their debut album ‘Foul’ drops this year. Listen to tune ‘Resourceful’:

WHO? Her’s
WHEN/WHERE? 12:15pm Thursday, Upstairs at Patterns
WHY: The Liverpool dream-pop duo have just dropped their incredible debut mini-LP ‘Songs Of Her’s’, and with streaming stats already in the millions, it looks as though we’re not their only fans.

WHO? Sigrid
WHEN/WHERE? 8:00pm Thursday, Coalition / 4:30pm Friday, Wagner Hall
WHY? The ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’ singer is pop’s hottest property right now, meaning her TGE performance might be your chance to catch her live before she really hits the big time.

WHO: River Matthews
WHEN/WHERE? 3:15pm Thursday, Upstairs at Patterns
WHY? If you’re a fan of mesmerising folk, you’ll love River Matthews. Listen to new cut ‘Stars’:

WHO? Jade Bird
WHEN/WHERE? 1:15pm Thursday, Upstairs at Patterns / 10:30pm Saturday, Prince Albert
WHY? The young songstress has been making some serious waves with her blues/Americana-inspired sound. Stick on her debut tune Madeline to see why:

WHO? Will Joseph Cook
WHEN/WHERE? 2:30pm Thursday, Wagner Hall / 9:00pm Thursday, Wagner Hall
WHY? Will has, (in our opinion), dropped the hottest pop album of the year so far with his debut LP ‘Sweet Dreamer’. He’s also an absolute genius when it comes to music videos:

WHO? Stevie Parker
WHEN/WHERE? 10:30pm Thursday, One Church / 9:30pm Friday, Prince Albert
WHY? If ambient electronic pop is your bag, then Stevie Parker is a must-see. Her captivating vocals have seen her compared to London Grammar’s Hannah Reid, and with a full-length album on the way, it looks as though 2017 is set to be Stevie’s year to shine.
