EXCLUSIVE: Interview with Sam Tompkins

Written by Live Nation Asia / May 08, 2020

Sam Tompkins is probably England’s most Promising and versatile new act. The young artist entered the new decade after a huge 2019, which saw him drop ‘From My Sleeve To The World’ - a five-track debut EP last October - which included ‘Faded’ featuring Birmingham Grime MC Jaykae. He also had a sold out tour of the UK & Ireland across London, Brighton, Manchester, Bristol, Dublin and Glasgow.

Sam is set to embark on his first ever world virtual tour presented by Live Nation. We caught up with him to chat about his musical background before he ‘performs’ in Asia.

Hi, Sam! Thanks for taking the interview. Can you tell us more about yourself? E.g. where are you from, music background, where do you live?

No problem. My name is Sam Tompkins. I am an artist/musician from Brighton in the U.K.

How would you describe your music to someone who's never seen you play before?

My music is from the heart. It’s honest and very autobiographical. No song sounds the same as another. The only consistency is storytelling and honesty.

What inspired you to start a career in music?

I always loved music growing up. The thing that inspired me most was the fact it was the only thing I was genuinely notably good at. I always wanted to do things differently, so when I came out of school, I just made it my mission.

We know you just released a new EP called “isolation diaries”. Can you tell us more about the writing/ production process?

The writing process was just all done in my bedroom. I would come up with a guitar riff and play that to a click and record it on my iPhone. Send that file over to my Mac, start-up logic, and then write melodies over that and find concepts. If I felt it needed extra production, I would send it over to Oshi who is my producer and he would do additional stuff. This really showed me I can do music anywhere.

What’s your favourite track from this EP and why?

My favourite track changed daily, but right now it’s “stand ten feet away from me” purely because I think it’s the fan favourite right now.

What would you say you enjoy writing about more, love or life?

I don’t have a preference. They’re both equally important to me. The only want I could answer this question is by saying “life” because love is a part of that.

Which artist would you like to collaborate with and why?

The artist I would most like to collaborate with is probably someone like Frank Ocean, even though I know that’ll never happen, just because I think his song writing technique is pretty unmatched.

What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

Biggest career highlight would be walking out to my London headline show and seeing about a thousand people there waiting for me. Was honestly so surreal.

Sam Tompkins

We are very excited about your Virtual Tour! What should audience expect? Any special message to people who will be watching the performance?

Me too! it’s a stripped back one. Just expect 5 songs filled with emotion is what I’d say. If you’re watching, I very much appreciate you taking the time out of your day to show support towards me and I really appreciate you staying inside and away from others as I think it make a huge difference in fighting this pandemic. Stay safe.
