BEYONCÉ PAUSES GLASGOW SHOW TO ADDRESS POLICE BRUTALITY

Written by Layla Halabian / July 08, 2016

Today, July 7, Beyoncé released a statement on her website addressing the murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, the two men who were recently killed by police officers. "We are sick and tired of the killings of young men and women in our communities," she writes about the back-to-back murders that occurred on July 5 and 6. "It is up to us to take a stand and demand that they 'stop killing us.' We don't need sympathy. We need everyone to respect our lives." She urged her followers to rise against the injustices and unite as a community toward judicial actions, and provided links on how to find and contact your local Congressman about putting an end to police brutality. "These robberies of lives make us feel helpless and hopeless," she explains, "but we have to believe we are fighting for the rights of the next generation, for the next young men and women who believe in good."

Mere hours after posting the statement, Bey and her Formation World Tour took the stage at Glasgow's Hamden Stadium, where she held a moment of silence for the victims, backed by a enormous screen displaying the names of black men and women who have lost their lives at the hands of the police.
