The prolific, veteran indie rock band EELS are down to the last few dates of the North American leg of their 2019 World Tour. After this, Mark Oliver Everett and co. will take a break before bringing the tour to Europe this summer.
The tour is support of the band's first LP in four years, and their 12th output, which dropped in 2018 - The Deconstruction.
“We need to bring the love and positive energy to some of the places we didn’t get to last time. We know you’re hurting. Help is on the way" said Everett in a statement.
And positivity is exactly what EELS has been delivering in cities across North America! Especially since the new album focuses on themes of compassion and kindness.
Fans from all over flocked to the shows, which until now had been far and few for some cities. Each show gets a taste of both the vulnerable rawness from each track, as well as some foot-stomping, rockin' good times.
Each night starts off on a high note as Everett leads the band through three covers. They open up with The Who's "Out in the Street" then follow up with Bobbie Gentry's "Mississippi Delta" and then close out the trio with Prince's "Raspberry Beret."
“If this is ‘dad rock,’ I'm All In!” Everett declared during their Millvale, Pennsylvania
But that's just the beginning of the set. EELS have crafted a generous 28-song setlist that includes TWO encores. During these sets and encores you might get to hear EELS dust off a deep cut.
During their Englewood, Colorado set, they performed "Tremendous Dynamite" for the first time since 2013, and "Fresh Feeling" for the first time since 2014. They've also done "In My Dreams," "A Magic World," and "That Look You Give That Guy" at various shows.
Out of the 28 songs, only three from The Deconstruction are weaved into the setlist: "Bone Dry," "You Are the Shining Light," and "Today is the Day." Plenty of other songs from their array of albums are added in there, but a lot come from Daisies of the Galaxy, Hombre Lobo: 12 Songs of Desire, and Souljacker.
