Along with the exciting news that Fleetwood Mac will return to Australia for this August/September, comes the even more exciting news that New Zealand royalty (although we like to call him our own) Neil Finn will be coming as part of the band’s new touring line-up.
Mick Fleetwood and Neil Finn first connected properly at the New Zealand Music Awards when the band were last in town, which led to Fleetwood teaming up with Finn and his son Liam Finn on their last album ‘Lightsleeper’.
Finn told Variety that during the recording of ‘Lightsleeper,’ "We actually had got to be good friends, and there was an immediate connection with the family during the course of recording. We felt very at home with him by the end of it, and Liam went and stayed with him in Hawaii just after [Liam's] baby was born. When the call came from him, it was like a friend ringing up — as you would when you’re young and starting bands in your 20s — and say, 'Hey man, our drummer just left, would you come and have a play and see how it feels?'”
The former Crowded House and Split Enz frontman officially joined the band midway through last year.
In a quote about Finn joining the group on tour, Mick Fleetwood shared, “Fleetwood Mac has always been about an amazing collection of songs that are performed with a unique blend of talents. We jammed with Mike and Neil and the chemistry really worked and let the band realise that this is the right combination to go forward with in Fleetwood Mac style. We know we have something new, yet it’s got the unmistakable Mac sound.”
The group also went on to collectively say, “We are thrilled to welcome the musical talents of the calibre of Mike Campbell and Neil Finn into the Mac family. With Mike and Neil, we’ll be performing all the hits that the fans love, plus we’ll be surprising our audiences with some tracks from our historic catalogue of songs. Fleetwood Mac has always been a creative evolution. We look forward to honouring that spirit on this upcoming tour.”
